. A fresh and colorful arrangement of flowers will brighten up any drab room in the house.

. Change the water in the vase or container daily.

. When cutting flowers, cut the stem at an angle, running it under cold water. This will help elite areas that bacteria can form.

. You must remove all he leaves off the stems that are below the water line. This is usually 6 inches from the bottom of the container. Leaves left under water begin to rot quickly and the resulting bacteria can kill the plant.

. The best time to pick fresh flowers is early in the morning just after the dew has dried.

Tips for a basic floral bouquet

. Fill a vase or container with 6 inches of water. Add the desired greenery and fern. Cut all the other flower stems at varying heights. Place them in the vase in a cascading pattern highlighting the most colorful flowers in the center.

. Add the rest of the filler plants or flowers at the last. Astilbe, Statice, and Roses make nice fillers.

. You can rearrange your bouquet every time you change the water. The water should be mixed with a floral food to increase its longevity. Properly cleaned and fed flowers can last for up to two weeks.

The best time to collect fresh flowers is in the early morning just after the dew is gone. Make sure it has not rained for at least 2 days as it will cause problems with drying. Make sure to handle the flowers carefully so they do not bruise.

Check the flowers first before picking to make sure they have not started to brown or wilt. Overly mature flowers tend to drop their leaves too easily in drying. Also make sure to use organic flowers that have not been treated with chemicals. After picking the flowers you can keep them in a vase of water up to 24 hours before they need to be dried.

Each Flower dries a little differently so the times referenced below are the closest approximations. The environment and humidity also plays a small role. When drying flowers it takes far longer to dry both the blossom and the green leaves and stem. If you chose to dry the greenery you will need to allow for about double the drying time.

Hang and Dry Flowers

The stems should be free of leaves. Use 5-7 flowers and make sure the bottoms of the stems are aligned evenly. Wrap a string 2 inches from the bottom of the stem and tie it securely. Its better to use stems of different sizes so the blossoms aren’t bunched together in the drying process. Hang the flower indoors in a dark area.

Allow them to hang for anywhere to 2-4 weeks. Another way to dry them is to take the bunches and put them blossom first into a brown paper bag. You can then hang them upside down anywhere, as the bag will keep the environment dark and will prevent dust from settling on them as they dry. Make sure to add a few small holes or ventilation. You can do several bundles this way using 5-7 flowers per bundle and bag.

Sometimes it can be difficult in selecting the best cut flowers for your bouquet or garden. Deciding what flowers to put in your garden can be a daunting experience. There are many factors to keep in mind such as height of the flower, colors, and when the flowers blossom throughout the season. The attendant at the garden department of the local mega mart is typically not going to know what kind of garden you would like, so knowing what you want the space to look like beforehand can make planting a much easier task.

Here are a few flower varieties that are found in classic American gardens.

Marigolds- these flowers are found in yellow, orange and red varieties or a combination. They blossom about 40 days from sowing them and don’t require very much water other than normal rainfall.

Morning Glory – Morning Glories have delicate heart shaped petals and come in a variety of colors such as red, blue, pink and lavender. This flower can grow very large, sometimes even as much as 6 feet tall.

Zinnias – These are traditional, resilient and beautiful flowers that blossom very frequently all throughout the season. This flower will need more watering than most. It requires rainfall every few days so if it is a dry season make sure to water them frequently.

Sunflowers – These are a classical necessity to any flower garden. They have willowish orange petals with a black circle in the middle. These flowers typically grow large, frequently over 7 feet tall. Their seeds are edible and in fact are quite delicious when roasted.

In order for your garden to be the best it can be it’s going to take some attention and love. Work in your garden as frequently as possible, trimming, watering and removing weeds. With a properly maintained garden you can have a free source of fresh cut flowers for many month out of the year.

What can I do to make my flowers last longer?

First it’s important to remember that some flowers naturally last longer than others, so when dealing with cut flower care, you’ll need to keep that in mind. Flowers like Carnations for example can remain fresh and vibrant for quite a bit longer than most flowers. Roses die quickly in vases, which would explain why they are so prized when they are beautifully fresh and delicate. Make sure to ask your florist how long your flowers will last when buying them.

If you are growing flowers in a garden, the Internet is a wonderful source of information.

Flower essentials

The best place to keep flowers is in a cool area, around 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the flower arrangement or vase out of direct sunlight as this can help dehydrate the blossoms. Done place your arrangement on top of or near a heating element such as TVs heating radiators or the kitchen stove. Make sure to avoid leaving flowers in the car.

If the flowers come in wet floral foam

Make sure to keep the foam saturated with water mixed with the plant food provided with the arrangement. If none was provided you can buy some at any florist. Make sure you are being cautious when mixing the plant food and following the directions on the packaging.

When the flowers come arranged in water.

Make sure the vase is filled with water and plant food provided by the florist at all times. If the water in the vase becomes cloudy then run the whole arrangement under cold water, allowing it to spill over the top. Allow the water to run until the vase is no longer cloudy. Re-cut the stems with a sharp knife under cold water to discourage bacterial growth.

Why should I use floral food in the first place?

Floral food is a complex combination of nutrients that naturally nourish the plant. It will also help discourage harmful bacterial growth in the plant and is the absolute best way to prolong the longevity of the plant. It’s very important to pay attention to the mixing instructions on the floral food’s label to prevent improper mixing. Over saturated floral food can kill your fresh flowers quickly.

Some people think the little pack of flower food or even a copper penny will extend the life of fresh flowers. Some think the temperature of the water makes all the difference. How do you keep fresh cut flowers fresh? Often time’s classical folk tips and tricks are based on good science and are typically the most effective.

Here are tried and true tips on keeping cut flowers fresh

Copper is a natural metallic preservative and acts like a fungicide to the bacteria and algae that can grow on the stems of fresh flowers while in their vases. Adding a couple of copper pennies to the vase can help keep them fresher longer.

Aspirin is a powerful acid for flowers and can kill the bacteria that spoil flowers.

Adding a couple tablespoons of lemon, orange or pineapple juice or even vinegar to a liter of a quart or two of water will also add enough acidity to the water to act as a natural preservative. This is the same reason why adding lemon juice to fresh foods will help keep their color longer and prevent browning. Make sure though if using vinegar or any other acid that you use a clear or lightly colored one. Dark balsamic and sherry vinegars might smell and taste wonderful but they are definitely not good for fresh flowers.

Here are some other basic guidelines to keep in mind with fresh cut flowers

Make sure to place the flowers in cold, not warm water. Flowers put in warm water will dehydrate.

Placing fresh cut flowers in the refrigerator overnight will lengthen their lifespan by three times.

Make sure to only add enough cold water to the vase to cover 6 inches of the stem. There is no reason to add more water and will only be harder to reduce the amount of bacteria in the vase.

Cutting the stems of your flowers every few days will make them last longer. Make a diagonal cut under water an inch about the last cut. Make sure to put them back into he water as quickly as possible.
