How to Dry Flowers – Hang and Dry Flowers
The best time to collect fresh flowers is in the early morning just after the dew is gone. Make sure it has not rained for at least 2 days as it will cause problems with drying. Make sure to handle the flowers carefully so they do not bruise.
Check the flowers first before picking to make sure they have not started to brown or wilt. Overly mature flowers tend to drop their leaves too easily in drying. Also make sure to use organic flowers that have not been treated with chemicals. After picking the flowers you can keep them in a vase of water up to 24 hours before they need to be dried.
Each Flower dries a little differently so the times referenced below are the closest approximations. The environment and humidity also plays a small role. When drying flowers it takes far longer to dry both the blossom and the green leaves and stem. If you chose to dry the greenery you will need to allow for about double the drying time.
Hang and Dry Flowers
The stems should be free of leaves. Use 5-7 flowers and make sure the bottoms of the stems are aligned evenly. Wrap a string 2 inches from the bottom of the stem and tie it securely. Its better to use stems of different sizes so the blossoms aren’t bunched together in the drying process. Hang the flower indoors in a dark area.
Allow them to hang for anywhere to 2-4 weeks. Another way to dry them is to take the bunches and put them blossom first into a brown paper bag. You can then hang them upside down anywhere, as the bag will keep the environment dark and will prevent dust from settling on them as they dry. Make sure to add a few small holes or ventilation. You can do several bundles this way using 5-7 flowers per bundle and bag.
